The best online fitness coaching for adults 35+
Short answer: It depends on how much of the plan needs to be yours alone. For a coach who builds every workout around you, Future is the clearest one-on-one option at $199 a month after a $50 first month. For a coach-written program with someone to ask, Functional Bodybuilding's Persist, Stronger with Lynn (women over 40), and our Always Ready cost $39 to $49 a month. Hunters and backcountry athletes should look at MTNTOUGH+, and men over 40 who want weekly calls with one coach should look at Peak Performance 40. We run Always Ready, so read this knowing that, and check the sources we list.
What to look for after 35
After 35, most people don't need more motivation. They need a week that covers what keeps them capable, and a person to ask. Here's what we'd look for in any program, including ours.
- Strength work that progresses, two to three days a week, with weights or reps that go up over time.
- Conditioning, both hard and easy. Short intervals raise your fitness ceiling, and long, easy efforts build a base you can recover from.
- A plan that keeps going, so week 13 isn't a new decision.
- Someone who answers, because a demo video can't tell you whether your version of a lift looks right.
- Honest terms: a clear price, a trial or refund window, and an easy way to cancel.

Future: best if you want a plan built only for you
Future pairs you with a remote coach who writes your workouts, checks in, and adjusts the plan from your feedback. It isn't aimed at a specific age group. It has the highest published price here, and the first month is refundable. Read our full Always Ready vs Future comparison.
Functional Bodybuilding Persist: best if you want track variety
Persist is the closest format to Always Ready. Marcus Filly writes it for adults 35+, and you can ask the team questions in the app. You choose from several tracks and can switch anytime. It costs a little less than Always Ready over a year. Its core method plans 60 minutes of cardio a week, where Always Ready plans two interval sessions plus an easy one. Read Always Ready vs Functional Bodybuilding.
MTNTOUGH+: best for hunters and mountain athletes
MTNTOUGH+ is a large library of programs for backcountry hunting, military, and first responder fitness, with mental toughness training included. It's the lowest price here and has a program for hunters over 50. It doesn't include an individual coach. Read Always Ready vs MTNTOUGH+.
Stronger with Lynn: best for women over 40 who want strength only
Lynn runs a progressive strength program for women over 40, with home and gym versions and direct chat with her. It doesn't plan cardio, so you'd add that yourself. See our guide to strength programs for women over 35.
Peak Performance 40: best for men over 40 who want weekly calls
Andrew Read coaches men over 40 one-on-one, with daily messaging, weekly calls, and a food and mindset framework. The price isn't published, so expect a conversation first.
Where Always Ready fits
Always Ready is one program that Mackie and Juliet write every week for adults 35+. It runs on a 3-2-1 week:
- 3 strength workouts, 45-60 minutes each, built in blocks so the weights go up through the year.
- 2 interval sessions, one 45-minute session and one shorter, harder 30-minute session, on any machine or outside.
- 1 low-intensity session on your own, like a long walk, hike, or ride, or a step goal for the week.
Each part does a different job. Strength keeps you capable, intervals raise your fitness, and the easy session adds volume you can recover from. Five of the six sessions are waiting in the app each week, so none of the three kinds of training gets skipped, and every workout has a dumbbell-and-bench version and a full-gym version.
It isn't personalized. If you want a plan built around you, that's our Custom Coaching, which usually runs three to six training days a week, sometimes two, depending on what you need. Pricing is set after a free strategy session, so apply and talk to us.

Common questions
What's the best online fitness coaching for adults over 35?
It depends on how personal you need the plan to be. For a plan built only for you, Future is $199 a month after a $50 first month. For a coach-written program with coaches you can ask, Functional Bodybuilding Persist, Stronger with Lynn, and Always Ready run $39 to $49 a month. Always Ready plans strength, intervals, and an easy session every week for adults 35+.
Is one-on-one online coaching worth the extra cost?
It's worth it if you're new to lifting, working around an injury, or training for a specific event, because a coach adjusts the plan as you go. If you've lifted before and want structure, a coach-written program with access to the coaches usually covers what you need for much less.
Which online fitness programs are made for people over 40?
Functional Bodybuilding markets Persist to adults 35+. Stronger with Lynn is for women over 40, and Peak Performance 40 is for men over 40. MTNTOUGH+ has a preseason program for hunters over 50. Always Ready is built for adults 35+.
How does Always Ready compare on price?
Always Ready is $49 a month after a 7-day free trial, with a free 30-minute Kickoff Call. That's more than MTNTOUGH+ and Persist, about the same as Stronger with Lynn, and about a quarter of Future's monthly price.
Can I switch from Always Ready to a personalized plan later?
